Ozark Spring Tour- A Learning Experience

One participant summed up the trip as, "Something every first time Porsche buyer should be required to do."  With a smaller group customizing the experience was done with ease.  We all drove together and found a reasonable and proper pace.  The pace was challenging without bordering on ill-advised.

All three Ozark trips this year incorporate a Sunday's drive to Big Cedar.  For Houston participants, that means (meant) getting up a little earlier and travelling either 553 or 559 miles to Big Cedar.  The variation is actual miles vs. Porsche miles.  Porsche miles tend to be .9894 of a real…

2012 Ozark Update; #3 - by Jack McCall

West Texas participants are packing their saddle bags as we speak.  Currently 15 Porsches are preparing for the, "Wagons, Ho," and "westbound and down."  Any last second interest is certainly welcome to join as long as we can secure the accommodations.
The April Ozark tour is up to 8 and should end up in the 12 to 15 range.  A group this size is not only more manageable, but the numbers allow an opportunity to get to know everyone.
The weather for the past two spring trips has been gorgeous, but even with the rain we experienced in the fall…

2012 Ozark Update; #1

Some changes are in store for 2012.  First the caravan will be different.  We will not stop in Marshall for breakfast.  We will be covering a lot more ground, going all the way up to Big Cedar.  That also means no escort by the Garland County Sheriff's Department.  We're not going through Hot Springs.
It looks like the caravan should be able to stay intact until Conway, AR.  From that point on, we will break into fragments.  This, however, should not present a problem as we will not turn off of US 65 until we're 3 miles…

2011 Ozark Update #11

Both the weather and animals challenged the November tour.  Monday's drive up to Big Cedar looked like it would get very wet.  Those who stayed more to the east may have experienced a slight sprinkle, and those who went up the Pig Trail (23) had a little rain, but not bad.  We should have seen a lot more rain according to the forecast, but somehow it held off to permit some great driving.

The October trip awoke to a sea of fog beneath Mt. Magazine, where the November trip had just the opposite.  The Lodge was encased in a…

Passive Safety in Your Porsche

Volvos are safe for two reasons.  First they do a very nice job of safety engineering and second they tell you that they did a very nice job of safety engineering.  Unfortunately, Porsche is a very small company and has a laundry list of praiseworthy attributes.  The bottom line is Porsche has a lot to brag about but can't afford to do the bragging.

Passive safety is what the vehicle does to protect its occupants after it becomes involved in an accident.  From Porsche's earliest days, safety has been an extremely important issue.  For those old enough to…

Active Safety in a Porsche

Form Follow Function

A long standing principle of Porsche design is that form follows function.  How many pretenders add phony scoops and go fast looking design elements to hint at power that probably isn't real either?  A rare exception for Porsche may have been the 996 C4S that kept the Turbo's intercooler slats when it borrowed the wide body sans intercoolers.

Surprisingly, an example of form following function today comes from the Panamera.  The Panamera, a clean sheet design, makes a very bold and independent statement. It could have gone the route of the competition by eliminating head room in the…

Ozark Update

Fall trip Nov. 6 thru Nov. 11, or Oct. 23 thru Oct. 28.

I do have some rooms remaining and will continue to take registrations as long as I can get rooms.

The trip shirts are in and available in advance, or will be handed out on the first night at Mt. Magazine.  The prerequisite for a shirt is a completed waiver.  This year's shirt is a diversion from the black shirts we've had for the past several years.

For those of you with scheduling conflicts, I can create custom packages for the October trip and possibly a…

Ozark Tour Update

2011 Ozark Update; #3
Fall trip Nov. 6 thru Nov. 11, or Oct. 23 thru Oct. 28.
Need something fresh and exciting?  Tired of the same old thrilling trip?  2011 promises 50 miles of new roller coaster track for your Porsche.  Do you want a better ride back home?  How about some really fun breakfasts to start your days?
By splitting into two trips the groups will be smaller.  We took a few things that were working very well and added some things that will keep the trip fresh and exciting.  The format is similar, but the content has been improved.  What are you waiting for?
It's getting close to that time when reservations should start coming in.  The November trip is starting to run low on king rooms at Big Cedar, otherwise availability is still good.  I do encourage the procrastinators to step it up.
For those who are new or not familiar to the trips, this is the first year that the trip has become a business.   I am now much more dependent upon the trip's success.
While pricing has been held to previous trip levels the content and services are surprisingly improved over previous trips.  Of course, this only works for me if both trips sell out.
While I realize that some of the regular participants cannot make it this fall, I ask that you do your best to either participate and/ or encourage someone else to take your place.  The future of the trip and my future depend on your support.  Yes, all the eggs are in one basket, but I can guarantee great eggs and a great basket.
This road trip is the only trip of its kind.  Porsche owners will experience a driving vacation like no other.  Actually those who can least afford the time off are the ones who need and enjoy the trip the most.  Please view the Ozark Tour as therapeutic.  I'm not sure if you can claim it as a medical deduction, but it certainly helps sooth what ails you.
Mt. Magazine provides a great jumping off point for our teams of three cars or less to make their way to Big Cedar Lodge the following day.  The small team concept encourages a lower profile and safer way for like cars and drivers to enjoy these fabulous roads.  This also dramatically reduces the pressure to drive outside your comfort zone.  We accommodate all varieties of Porsche and driving skills.
Activities are balanced between organized and your preference.  In other words, it's your trip.  You're welcome to join in group projects, just chill at the resort, or explore the roads on your own.  These roads showcase Porsche's engineering prowess.  You will, undoubtedly, come away with a new appreciation for your Porsche.
The dinners bring us all back together to share the events of the day as well as some terrific food.  Thank you to those who have already signed up.
I encourage questions and will try to modify the format, where possible, to accommodate any of your scheduling or special needs.  If it's not asking too much, please let me know your intentions so I can plan accordingly.
We will be getting together to pass out trip books, shirts, radios, and Arkansas State Trooper stickers before departing.
For those who prefer not to get up early for our Sunday morning departure, consider driving up to Marshall, TX the afternoon before.  The Hampton Inn is almost next door to the Golden Corral where the caravan will arrive around 10:14 AM.  Hopefully you can join in the fun.
