2013 981 Boxster

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4

The new Boxster is more than merely an evolution of the current 987 Boxster.  The previous generation Boxster (987) has been crowned the benchmark for premium brand 2 seat roadsters.  Benchmark infers a target for the competition, however this new Boxster has moved in to a category of one.

To call the new Boxster a new Boxster may also be a bit misleading.  The 981 is the quintessential sports car, a rebirth, or modern expression of the…

Ozark Spring Tour- A Learning Experience

One participant summed up the trip as, "Something every first time Porsche buyer should be required to do."  With a smaller group customizing the experience was done with ease.  We all drove together and found a reasonable and proper pace.  The pace was challenging without bordering on ill-advised.

All three Ozark trips this year incorporate a Sunday's drive to Big Cedar.  For Houston participants, that means (meant) getting up a little earlier and travelling either 553 or 559 miles to Big Cedar.  The variation is actual miles vs. Porsche miles.  Porsche miles tend to be .9894 of a real…

Drill, Baby, Drill

Just don't drill the front bumper of your Porsche.  Legally, yes, a front license plate is required in Texas.  From recent encounters, West Texas seems to place a higher value on the front plate being displayed than cities like Houston.
Some of the troopers in this area feel that it's an easy way to pull someone over when they're actually looking for something else.  They don't place a high priority on…

We All Have To Start Somewhere

While attending this year's club race, Jim Troxel mentioned that had I sold him his first Porsche in 1994.  His 968, complete with M030 sport chassis option, inspired him to become more involved with performance driving.  Since then, Jim's driving skills and desires have permitted him to both acquire and enjoy some more aggressive models.  At the time of purchase, however, Jim had no idea what a sport chassis was.  Apparently he liked the color of the 968.

West Texas News from the Road

By virtue of the higher speed limits, West Texas has been moved closer to Houston.  Most of the trip from Houston to San Antonio is now posted at 75 MPH.  Without being too abusive of leniency above the limit, a nice pace may be maintained most of the way.  West of Kerrville the limit goes up to 80.  Those little dots on the map just moved a little closer to each other.
Our caravan took the interstate, believing that average speed is the way to go.  After lunch in San Antonio at Jason's Deli, a group of four Porsches…

2012 Ozark Update; #3 - by Jack McCall

West Texas participants are packing their saddle bags as we speak.  Currently 15 Porsches are preparing for the, "Wagons, Ho," and "westbound and down."  Any last second interest is certainly welcome to join as long as we can secure the accommodations.
The April Ozark tour is up to 8 and should end up in the 12 to 15 range.  A group this size is not only more manageable, but the numbers allow an opportunity to get to know everyone.
The weather for the past two spring trips has been gorgeous, but even with the rain we experienced in the fall…

The Almost Completely New Porsche 911/991

Let's start by putting this new model into perspective.  The new 991 911 Carrera S turned a lap time on Nurburgring's Nordschleife of 7:40.  Is that good?  Here are a few cars that also turned 7:40's: Lamborghini Murcielago LP640, MB SLR McLaren, and Ford GT40.  The 2010 Porsche Turbo was clocked at 7:39.

Are we looking at a radical change?  While the 991's appearance may seem very similar to all the other 911's to a non-Porsche person, this car is 17 seconds faster than its predecessor on the previously mentioned track.  That…

991 V 997/2

First of all, there is no V.  The debut of the 991 does not mean the 997 is yesterday's news.  Oh contraire, The 997 now becomes an instant classic.  To discount the competitiveness and stature of the 997 is sacrilege.  For its time, the 997 has represented the quintessential sports car.  In no way, shape, or form should the 997 apologize for anything.
Essentially, the 997 and 991 are playing for the same team.  The 991 is a first round draft choice that will guarantee the future success of the franchise.  In some cases it may be necessary to…

Porsche Miles Like Dog Years

There are different philosophies in Porsche ownership.  Some say keep the miles down for resale's sake, while others think it's a sin not to drive and enjoy your Porsche.  Who's right?  Is there a one size fits all?
First let's examine the not to drive scenario.  Among the pluses are higher resale, less maintenance, and preservation of a piece of art.  However by not driving your Porsche, you are missing the benefits that eclipse mere transportation.  By not driving it, the seals can dry (and leak), the tires can dry and flat spot and the battery…
